Spiritual Clutter
We have already talked about removing clutter from our houses and even our minds in our previous MOE. In this MOE let’s talk about spiritual clutter. What is spiritual clutter? Spiritual clutter are those things that hinder our growth with God. I won’t say our relationship with God, because we can’t do anything to change God’s love for us. However, we can do thing to increase our growth for God.
…Lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us and let us run with patience this race. Hebrews 12:1
Lay aside the weight. Some things aren’t necessarily a sin, they are just weights. The passage in Hebrew teaches us that weights are not conducive for running races. Runners have to be as light as possible and they prepare by making their bodies by stripping away anything that may hinder their bodies from enduring the race and finishing the task. This is what we have to do to declutter our spiritual lives. We have to give up things that keep us at bay with our creator. For example, watching television isn’t a sin, but if we spend more time with the television than we do with God, then it becomes a weight. Social media is not necessarily a sin, but when we spend more time on our phones, than we do with God, we have crowded our spirit man with clutter. I know it can be very I know it can be very easy to spend time on social media. I love debating and this is an easily accessible outlet to indulge. I remember a few years ago I was very heavily into having debate wars on Facebook. I am ashamed to say it, I would spend hours debating with complete strangers about anything from politics to religion. It was a serious weight! Imagine where my level of frustration and excitability had to be in order to engage with such a fruitless activity. I would post, and then keep checking for who would respond. I would ponder my next response. I would even search and post scriptures just to be right! Galatians 5:7 and verse 13 chin checked me! You ran well, but who hindered? (Galatians 5:7) In other words, oh you’re running in the race Crystal, but those weights of selfishness are hindering your progress. Drawing from the Sunday School lessons from the month of October, I wasn’t “Abiding Love”. I was doing it for my own self gloat. I am so glad that God convicted on that weight! It becoming to heavy to keep doing that every day all day! It was not increasing anything but my ego and my spiritual life was cluttered, and my growth was stunted. Can I just I am so glad that God allowed me to rid myself of that weight through conviction of the Holy Ghost! Hallelujah!
Remember that clutter takes up space that could otherwise be beautiful! Remember in our last MOE I talked about putting a pretty plant in the corner that was once occupied with clutter? The devil’s job to replace the spiritual things in your life with things that distract us from God. When your spirit is cluttered with things that aren’t of God, then you have no room for the good things. Spiritual clutter keeps out the good things Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Make your spirit man a beautiful place for the Holy Spirit to dwell.
The battle of the spirit and the Flesh
Remember your spirit is always in constant competition with your flesh. Your flesh wants to be fed. You cannot fulfil the cravings of the Holy Spirit when your spirit is cluttered with things that are contrary to the God. Fight like crazy to kill your flesh. Pray! Fast! Study God’s Word. Like Forrest Gump, “Run Forrest Run!” Stay away from people that do not strengthen your walk with God. Stay away from places that don’t cultivate your relationship with God. Remove distractions that keep your from spending time with the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:6 tells us that to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. The amplified version says it like this. The mind of the flesh is death, both now and forever-because it pursues sin. Your flesh is never up to any good, and you must to crucify it daily! (Galatians 5:24)
One thing I love about the Holy Spirit is that He will never forces himself upon you. Removing the clutter from your spirit is a choice. It can be a battle, but every believer should take confidence in knowing that we are not in this race by ourselves. 1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God who gives the victory.” Jude 1:20 tell us to build yourselves up on our most holy faith [continually progress], praying in the Holy Spirit. The entire chapter of Ephesians chapter four address the things that clutter our spirit. I do however, urge you to read that passage and take an inventory of your spirit man and remove everything that grieves the Holy Spirit.
As we close this MOE, I pray that we as women of God will be mindful of how relationship with God. I pray that we will remove the clutter that weighs us down and slows our race. Remember not to rely on your own strength, but to lean on God’s everlasting arms. Remember that even in our weakness, His strength is made perfect. Psalms 18:32 declarer that God is my strength and power: and he makes my way perfect.
I hope that you are enjoying these MOE moments. I enjoy sharing them with you. I want to encourage any of you to feel free to share your own MOE. Please feel free to ask questions, post vlogs, or share anything that you’d like to share within this platform.
Blessings!
