One time while playing on the organ at our church convention, the guitar player leaned over to me and said these words, “a lot of musicians know how to play, but they don’t always know what or when to play it”. He went on to compliment me for knowing the difference. I accounted that compliment to wisdom! Knowing what to play and when to play it! Wisdom is knowing what do with the knowledge that has been acquired!
Some of the wisdom that I have gained as a musician has come directly from the instruction from others. Elder Lewis Hall from Grace Memorial Church of God in Christ would allow me to set next to him on the organ and he would just share wisdom about how to conduct myself as an organist. I listened to him intently and still to this day, I treasure his wisdom!
Some musical wisdom has come from just watching other musicians. I’ve witnessed musicians usher in the Holy Spirit, but I’ve also seen musicians dismiss the Holy Spirit! I’ve kept those experiences in my music wisdom box, so that I know how to conduct myself as a minstrel! Both of those experiences have helped me increase in knowledge, however, the best wisdom has come from just asking the Holy Spirit to lead me.
I confess that some of the best Worship experiences that I’ve had is when God gave me wisdom to play the right songs at the right time! As a minstrel, you don’t always feel up to ministering! It’s in those times that I pray not only for God’s anointing, but His wisdom. God is always so willing to give me what to sing and what to play! Hallelujah!
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding. Psalms 4:7. You cannot operate in this life without wisdom. You need it daily, on our job, in your marriage, in school, and in every aspect of your life. Don’t be that musician who plays the wrong song at the wrong time! Get you some wisdom!
Pride can keeps us from asking God for wisdom! I get it! We want to do things on our own! It’s our nature to want to be independent! However, wisdom is a gift from God! If you lack wisdom, then just ask for it!
Lord help us to use knowledge at the right time! Lord help us not to be prideful and forgo asking you for wisdom! God we thank you that you freely give it to us! Lord teach us to number our days and incline our hearts to wisdom! Psalms 90:12. In Jesus Name Amen!
